The gunman identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, was shot four times by a Fort Hood police officer and is currently in custody.
Krueger, 29, was a sergeant with the Madison-based 467th Medical Detachment. She was a 1998 graduate of Kiel High School in Kiel, Wis and studied Psychology at UW-Whitewater.
She went on a leave of absence from UW-Whitewater to be deployed to Iraq a few weeks ago, said senior Jeff Prins.
Bob Sweet, Krueger's landlord in Whitewater, said he got to know Amy personally and said her death is a great tragedy.
“She was a very special, special person," Sweet said. "She had absolutely no problems with being in the army and protecting us because that’s what they do out there and trying to get to the bottom of the ugliness over there but unfortunately the ugliness hit her before.”
One other soldier from Wisconsin, Russell Seager of Mount Pleasant, was killed and three other Wisconsin natives were injured in the shooting.
Friday afternoon the Veterans Administration hospital in Madison confirmed Dorie Carskadon, a social worker and the team leader from the Madison Vet Center, was injured according to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal.
Amber Bahr of Random Lake and Grant Moxon of Lodi were also injured.
A candlelight tribute service for Krueger is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at Veterans Memorial Park, 28 Water St., in Kiel. The Royal Purple will release more information as it becomes available.
