UW-Whitewater students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a variety of cultures during International Education Week, Nov. 9-13.

International Education Week is a national event celebrated throughout the year on various college campuses.

The event encourages people to experience different cultures through activities, lectures and presentations on-campus. The theme for the 2009 celebration is "Creating a Vision for a Better Future."

The International Student Association has been putting the event together since the summer.

"I knew about the program and we didn't do it last year, so I contacted the president of International Student Assocation," Jessica Harmatys, international student advisor for ISA, said. "We came up with ideas, brainstormed and put the schedule together."

Students can choose from a variety of activities, films, presentations and lectures throughout the week. All events are free.

The week will kick off on Monday morning with a Henna hand-painting session at the University Center.

Students can indulge in Chinese moon cakes, Sri Lankan cupcakes, and Long Island cookies at the bake sale Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the UC.

Three foreign films will be shown as part of the international movie festival in the Timmerman Auditorium in Hyland Hall Tuesday through Thursday.

For students who have always wanted to take their education abroad but cannot afford the expense of an entire semester in another country, travel study is an excellent option.

A travel study fair will be held Wednesday from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. outside the University Center.

Other events include an international dance workshop to teach attendants Indian dance and Asian hip-hop as well as an international dance to conclude the week on Friday. The dance will take place at 8 p.m. in Jitters Coffee House.
