Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. became an official charter on campus August 2.

Current President of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority Inc., senior Odille Danford, said needing a home away from home that would provide support and encouragement brought about the inspiration to introduce a new sorority on campus.

"There were no community service sororities on campus and myself and the others were in search of a way to get more involved with the community," Danford said.

Danford said the first step was to be recognized as an Official Interest Group by the National Association of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc.

"In order to be recognized on campus sisters from the region consisting of Courtney 'Diamond' Luedke, Madonna 'Tempstad' Marchan, and our advisor Dr. Pilar Melero presented us to the Greek Expansion committee," Danford said. "Once we were approved more ladies became interested, our next phase is chapter status."

Other supporters of the sorority include Dr. Richard McGregory of academic Support services and Jan Bilgen of Career and Leadership Development, Danford said.

Danford said Gamma Alpha Omega offers an array of volunteer opportunities for women and are implementing a mentoring program at local area high schools where one on one work with young girls will take place.

"We hold our sisters to high academic standards with having a cumulative GPA of 3.1," Danford said. "We are a very welcoming organization seeking women with high moral and ethical standards."

Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. is a lifelong commitment. It is not for women who seek the typical undergraduate Greek experience, Danford said.

"Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc is for women who wish to build and gain their leadership skills, networking skills on and off campus," Danford said.
