Obama: King's dream come true?

Members of Pi Kappa Alpha volunteered at the Mulberry Glen senior center and the Whitewater Community Library.
In 1994, Congress and the Corporation for National and Community Service transformed the King Holiday into a National Day of Service.
This year, the Obama family rallied the support of volunteers across the nation. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, more than 12,100 service projects took place Monday.
Senior Tim Scully and AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator Cheryle Gacsh organized the day of service for his Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
"It helps make our community a better place in which to live," Scully said. "It's also important to let the community know that university students care about our community and its members."
Reaching out to communities and bridging the civil rights gap were aspirations of King's, provoking many to ask one question; has President Obama been King's dream come true?
Richard McGregory, advisor of the Black Student Union and interim director of academic services, believes King would be pleased with the development made.
"But there is still much work to be done," McGregory said.
Scully agrees King's dream has yet to be fulfilled.
"Though the election of Barack Obama has shown that one bridge has been overcome, there are still many hills to climb," Scully said.
