Eric Lund, an alumnus of UW-Whitewater, will be the keynote speaker at the Winter Commencement Ceremony Dec. 20 in the Kachel Fieldhouse.

"It's something that you never think about doing, but when you're asked, you reflect back on the magnitude of what school meant to you and the chance to touch young peoples lives," he said. "I'm honored and look forward to speaking to the graduates and their families."

Lund graduated in December 1991 with a bachelor's degree in public policy administration. He co-founded a hospitality development and management business called Stark and Lund Hospitality four years later.

Lund said the campus size and atmosphere didn't make him feel like a statistic when he was a student.

"It was a great experience," he said. "The professors and the quality of the education are outstanding. Everywhere you go, people recognize the university and its greatness."

Serving on the Dean's Advisory Board for the College of Letters and Sciences has re-engaged Lund with the university during the past two years, he said.

"It has been a pleasure getting to know other people I went to school with that I didn't know at the time, and I've made new business acquaintances," he said.

Lund said he believes it is important for graduates to stay connected with the university.

"It's kind of like a fraternity that you have for life," he said.

In his speech, Lund plans to share principles he has followed since he graduated and hopes students can use them to help within their own lives.

The first is to "know the game," an idea based on understanding career situations graduates will find themselves in. He will talk about how opportunity is related to setting goals, as well as how graduates can put themselves in positions to gain prospects. He will also address the need to keep everything in perspective, learn from experiences and stay true to values.

"Hopefully people can take something from the message that I'll share or learn from certain examples given the tough economic times that we're in right now," he said.
