Baldwin has long been a proponent of public education. She believes that grants and federal aid must be made easier to obtain. She says the costs of tuition are forcing some prospective students to abandon college altogether. She believes that the education is the key to a strong economy, and that global competition relies on the competitiveness of our workforce.
Besides education, Baldwin believes the current tax system is playing a large part in our current economic status. She believes that the Bush tax cuts threatened the future of Social Security and Medicare. She would pursue tax relief for citizens, but only if it did not threaten essential government programs.
Like Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Baldwin is pushing for universal health care. Lowering prescription drug costs and increasing medical research Is vital to improving health care she says.
Peter Theron - 2nd Congressional District
Age: 52
Education: Bachelor's Degree from Princeton University; Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin
History: None
Theron believes that Wisconsin has become less of a business friendly environment due to the current Democratic Congress. He believes companies need to be encouraged not to send jobs overseas and increase new jobs in Wisconsin for new college graduates.
Energy independence is an issue that Theron strongly supports. Clean coal and nuclear power are needed to provide affordable energy he says. Off shore drilling is also a necessity to lower fuel costs in the short term according to Theron.
Theron believes in creating a pool in which small-business owners can group together to obtain affordable health care plans for their employees. He believes that a large majority of those uninsured are employed by small-businesses.
Paul Ryan - Incumbent; 1st Congressional District
Age: 38
Education: Bachelor's degree from Miami University in Ohio
History: House of Representatives 1998-Present
Ryan has long been a supporter of improving improved funding for current and prospective college students. He says current grants and aid does not go far enough to support all people looking to attend college. He has also been a proponent of increasing funding to math and science programs at the university level.
High tax rates and health care costs have created the current poor economic situation in Wisconsin, according to Ryan. He believes that corporate tax rates need to be lowered to increase economic prosperity.
Health care costs are cutting deep into the pockets of Wisconsin's citizens says Ryan. Government needs to lower costs by increasing competition in the health care market Ryan says. He also believes care is not adequate and below what Americans should be receiving for the high costs they pay.
Marge Krupp - 1st Congressional District
Age: 52
Education: Bachelor's degree from UW-Milwaukee; Master's degree from Northwestern University
History: None
Krupp believes that the current education system is under-funded. She says well-trained workers needed to boost the economy will be trained by public schools and universities.
The health care system needs to be streamlined according to Krupp. She cites that 25 percent of health care costs are just from paperwork alone. The fractured health care system and high drug costs are causing many Americans to go without coverage says Krupp.
A healthy economy can be obtained through better regulating our financial institutions says Krupp. She also believes that current workers need to stay competitive by keeping up with new technologies to stay competitive in the global marketplace.
