Lockup times at Greenhill Center of the Arts are now half an hour earlier than previous semesters, causing frustration for many students who practice or work on projects at night.
The CA now closes at 10:30 p.m., as opposed to 11:00 p.m. in past semesters.
Although the CA was broken into last spring and about $40,000 worth of electronics equipment was stolen, it is not the reason for closing early, said Dick Haven, interim dean of the College of Arts and Communications.
He said the change was due to the availability of the person who locks the doors in the evening.
"There were two break-ins in three different rooms," he said. "But that is not the reason for the earlier lock-ups.
"We are working to secure these areas. The general access of the building has not changed. It was more a matter of staffing change."
Although the CA is still open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. as usual, the doors will now be locked at 10:30 p.m., meaning anyone who wishes to use the building in the evening must arrive before the lock-in time.
"It affects a lot of music majors who like to practice," said Darren Sterud, a fifth-year senior majoring in Music Performance. "I'd say [music majors] were some of the busiest majors, so we have to practice as soon as the CA opens sometimes; and there are people practicing until it closes."
