This weekend's Pike Spike is an excellent opportunity to have fun while making a valuable contribution to the life of children around the world.

Pike Spike is a volleyball tournament sponsored by Pi Kappa Alpha to benefit Hope for Hailey.

Pi Kappa Alpha President, Kappa Omega Chapter, Derek Roe asked students to "help support Hope for Hailey and Pi Kappa Alpha."

Hailey Meltz is a two-year-old girl who was diagnosed with Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytoma, a type of childhood brain tumor affecting thousands of children each year. The Hope for Hailey Foundation is partnered with Fight PLGA to search for a cure.

The two day volleyball tournament is located on the sand volleyball courts outside the Williams Center.

The games will start at 12 p.m. and end at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 28. There will be food, beverages and chances to win prizes.

Free t-shirts will be distributed for those who sign up. On Saturday night, those who wear their shirts will receive a discount on drinks at Pumpers and Mitchells downtown.

The event is open to the public, and anyone who registers will be able to play. The cost is $40 for every 5-person team. To register, e-mail Derek Roe at roedr31@uww.edu.

Pi Kappa Alpha hopes to have 32 teams participating in the double elimination style tournament.

According to Fight PLGA's Web site, "Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytomas (PLGAs) are unequivocally the most common form of childhood brain tumors. The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States estimates there are over 20,000 children with PLGAs today with over 1,000 new children diagnosed with some type of astrocytoma brain tumor each year." There is no cure for PLGA.

According to Hailey's Web site, brain tumors are the second largest cause of childhood death, after accidents. The treatments are described as "outdated, toxic, and ultimately torturous to the thousands of kids affected."

Treatments include chemotherapy and radiation. Chemotherapy can generally only slow or stop the tumor from growing, but cannot help it shrink. However, there is a new focus on PLGA because many parents have raised money research, which had been notoriously underfunded.

The PLGA Web site states "To date, families associated with the Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytoma Foundation have raised over $6 million for dedicated PLGA research and funded over $3.8 million of new research targeted specifically at children's brain tumors or PLGA's.

These funds have supported the launch of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute's PLGA Research Program as well as numerous grants distributed by the Brain Tumor Society, and other fine institutions."

The money raised by Pike Spike will help doctors find a cure for kids like Hailey.

This is a chance for some fun in the sun while supporting a worthy cause.
