Evidence found in ongoing investigations surrounding the death of a UW-Whitewater freshman indicate suicide, City of Whitewater Police Chief James Coan said Thursday.

"The Whitewater Police is aware that Jefferson County Coroner Patrick Theder ruled the cause of death for Joseph R. Hummer as suicide by self- asphyxiation," Coan said. "Also, the autopsy revealed no medical condition or signs of foul play."

The body of Joseph R. Hummer, 18, was found Monday in Calvary Cemetery near Esker Hall by maintenance workers.

Hummer, from Beloit, Wis., graduated in 2008 from Turner High School.

Coan said the police department is still conducting its investigation and hopes to have more information by early next week.

"We have two detectives on the case and they've be been interviewing various people both here and in Beloit," he said.

The visitation for Hummer is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at Daley, Murphy, Wisch & Assoc. Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Rd., Beloit, Wis.

Hummer's funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 747 Hackett St. in Beloit.

Counseling services are available for students, faculty and staff at University Health and Counseling Services.

To schedule an appointment call (262) 472-1305. Walk-ins also are accepted. A grief group meets at 4 p.m. Tuesdays on the second floor of the Ambrose Health Center.

The Royal Purple will continue to have more information as it becomes available.

It isn't supposed to add up. It never does. While there are almost always some warning signs, there is no "profile" of a suicidal youth. Certain illnesses strike people of all shapes and sizes. (Continued…)

Typically -- those "suicidal youth" are so for attention. It's not completely objective, obviously, but often times the people who do follow through with suicide are those who have never mentioned it -- those who you wouldn't expect. (Continued…)

I wish people would not speculate about the suggested suicidal state of someone they never knew. People who are considering suicide generally aren't making plans. (Continued…)

I am an extended family member of Joey.
It is difficult to imagine and understand why this wonderful young man would take his own life. Instead of dwelling on this, it should challenge us to follow Joey's example of living life. (Continued…)
