Each year, staff from UW-Whitewater and the Fairhaven Retirement Community join forces to put on a series of informative lectures. The lectures have been a tradition in the community for over 20 years.
This fall's lectures will, which began on Sept. 8 and will go through late November, and speeches
Each of the speeches will be held at the Fairhaven Retirement Community, located at 435 West Starin Road. The location is just a short walk from the campus.
There will be a speech every Monday at 3 p.m. UW-Whitewater faculty plan to speak for 30 to 40 minutes on their issues, with time at the end for questions from the audience. The lecture series in free of charge.
Lecture series coordinator John Stone, dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education, encourages people to attend the series. His goal is to increase the attendees this year.
"It's designed to serve everyone in the area, and anyone who wants to attend," Stone said.
In addition to actually attending the lectures, students can view or listen to them from their computer in the form of podcasts.
Last year, 1,383 views were recorded for the video podcasts, as well as 1,226 downloads for the audio versions. This year, the numbers are expected to be higher, Jones said.
Dr. Dan Stalder, assistant professor, department of psychology, thinks the lecture series will be very useful to students.
"I think it will help people to better evaluate what they see in the media about the candidates. "If you can better evaluate what you hear in the news, you will be able to make a better decision in voting," Stalder said.
This will be the country's 56 presidential election. The 2008 Fall Fairhaven Lecture Series will address numerous issues surrounding this year's election.
Podcasts for each lecture are found on the web at www.uww.edu/conteduc/fairhaven. This site also offers the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 lectures for download in the form of podcasts.
