Three males sexually assaulted a female student Sept. 4 in parking lot 11 near the Williams Center.
The males approached the student at 11:56 p.m. She was not seriously injured.
The university issued a statement Tuesday urging students, faculty and staff to be aware of their surroundings when walking around campus, and to take safety precautions.
"While UW-Whitewater is a safe environment, things can and do happen," UW-Whitewater Police Chief Matt Kiederlen said in the statement. "Take appropriate precautions, walk with friends and avoid dimly lit areas."
He asked that if students see anything suspicious not to hesitate to inform police.
"We would much rather investigate 100 incidents where nothing happens than miss one where something does," Kiederlen said in a campus-wide e-mail.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (262) 472-4660. Callers may remain anonymous.

When I got the email about the woman who was assaulted I felt horrible for her, but angrier still at the campus. Last year the university discontinued safe walk (a program that was lacking to begin with) because of budget issues if I recall correctly. (Continued…)

Just so you are aware, safe walk was discontinued because it was not taken advantage of. However, it is still being offered by campus police, who are readily available and willing to escort anyone from Point A to Point B. (Continued…)

Thank you for the correction on why safe walk was cancelled. It is great that campus police provide this service. I would yet again like to point out however that this unfortunate event happened on a Thursday night, a time when many are drinking. (Continued…)
