College students and community members living below the poverty level are eligible for assistance from the Whitewater food pantry at the Old Armory.
The federal limit for one person's income must be $1,156 a month or lower to be eligible to receive food from the food pantry.
The food pantry serves about 800 people per month and is open from 9 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Thursday. An average Wednesday has about 45 families and an average Thursday about 45 families. Individuals and families receive groceries once a month.
The food pantry also collects boxes with potatoes, carrots and onions that people can help themselves to.
"You really learn a lot. Some stuff you've never heard of," food pantry director Marilyn Kienbaum said, referring to items in give away boxes such as couscous.
The food pantry is located at 146 W. North St. on the second level of the Old Armory.
