The Chancellor Search and Screen Committee narrowed its search to five applicants.

The five were chosen after a series of interviews in Milwaukee by the Search and Screen Committee headed by Jimmy Peltier, chair and UW-Whitewater marketing professor. The eleven Milwaukee candidates were chosen from all applications received from potential candidates.

Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs Nancy Kleniewski from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts was the first candidate to visit UW-Whitewater.

While at Bridgewater, she initiated a program of self-learning and civic-engagement, increased the number of faculty positions by 50 and emphasized student engagement while also improving the student transfer process.

According to the Search and Screen Committee's Web site, Kleniewski oversaw the construction of a $90 million science building at Bridgewater and is an advocate of community and state outreach programs.

Alfred Guillaume, Jr., vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at Indiana University South Bend visited UW-Whitewater after Kleniewski. Guillaume strongly advocates diversity and focus on students. He believes in partnering with the community to improve the university's image.

As vice chancellor, Guillaume established stronger ties with community minority groups, improved the student and faculty exchange program and worked with deans to establish new programs, according to the search and screen committee.

Interim President of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, Kenneth Borland was the next candidate to visit Whitewater. Borland focused extensively on fundraising efforts while at East Stroudsburg, amassing about $45 million, he said.

Borland helped to improve performance and enrollment at East Stroudsburg, improved academic quality and worked extensively with federal, state and local governments to promote the campus.

UW-Whitewater Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer was the fourth candidate to discuss via forum his hopes for consideration of chancellor in 2007 when Martha Saunders left to become president at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Before his current appointment, Telfer served UW-Whitewater as the provost and vice chancellor.

As interim chancellor, Telfer helped establish a "climate commitment" committee, has reached out to students and community members and helped to establish a crisis planning group.

Chief Executive Officer of the Bowling Green State University Research Institute John Folkins is the final candidate to visit campus. In 2007, he left the position of provost at Bowling Green State University to serve his current position.

The Bowling Green State University of Research Institute is a non-profit corporation dedicated to marketing intellectual property, he said.

While serving as provost at Bowling Green State University, Folkins reported on academic fund raising and development, a diversity task force and environmental sustainability.

On May 7, UW System President Kevin Reilly along with a committee from the Board of Regents will interview the five candidates in Madison, Peltier said.
