The new restaurant on Main Street features gyros and other items on its menu.

A new restaurant, Café Pueblo Pedro, is open in Whitewater and has been steadily attracting customers during the last two months.

"I started to be open only in the day, but when we started closing late we started to get better business," Pablo Dalatorre, restaurant owner, said. "For college students, after they go to the bar if they want something to eat they can come here."

Dalatorre is an immigrant from Guadalajara, Mexico and has been in the United States since 1995.

"I come from the big city, not the country," Dalatorre said. "When you come from a city that, at the time that I left, had 5 million people, it's easy to have a lot of different ideas."

Café Pueblo Pedro's menu includes gyros, burgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, tacos, wings and burritos.

Dalatorre said the best deal for students would be the gyro meal. It comes with a gyro, fries and a soda for $6.54 with tax.

"The main thing is students need gyros," Dalatorre said. "I like gyros, and I know the students like them too."

The decorations, tables and chairs are unusual and diverse. Dalatorre said the colors give the restaurant a lot of attention at night

"About 90 percent of people like it and the other 10 percent don't like it, and I don't care," Dalatorre said. "The main thing is people like the tables and that's fine. I don't want to get rid of something that people like. We're a little different than other places."

Dalatorre has been involved with the city of Whitewater. In Mexico he played semi-pro soccer and when he came to the U.S. he helped coach kids at the UW-Whitewater soccer camp.

"Whitewater is a college town and I like that," Dalatorre said.

Other than owning a restaurant Dalatorre has made clothes and sold cars.

Café Pueblo Pedro also delivers but it is short on drivers so delivery is difficult.

Sophomore Danielle Bilgo had a good reaction to the new opening of a restaurant in downtown Whitewater.

"I like variety and it's a good market," Bilgo said. "The more the merrier."
