Alumni, students receive awards during Founder's Day

James Stewart, class of 1975, received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service. He served in the Registrar's office for 21 years before retiring as Registrar in 2001. He has served on the Whitewater Common Council for six years and the School Board of the Whitewater Unified School District for 21 years.
Stewart joked that doing volunteer work makes people happy and lowers blood pressure.
"I really should be thanking all of you for allowing me to do this," he said.
John Madison, class of 1975, and Timothy Hyland, class of 1982, received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.
Madison is the executive vice president of business development, sales and marketing for Entertainment Distribution Co. He said the university opened its doors to veterans like him after the Vietnam War.
"I can't thank this university enough for doing that during that tough time," he said.
Madison has endowed a scholarship in honor of former UW-Whitewater history professor Jack Filipiak.
Hyland served as the chief financial officer of Schaller Anderson Inc. for 13 years. In 2004, he made a donation to the new College of Business and Economics building which will be named after him.
Mark Dorn, class of 1974, received the Distinguished Alumni Award for service to UW-Whitewater. He became director of Alumni Relations in 1987 and served there for 20 years before retiring in 2007.
Tiffany Prather, class of 1992, received the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award.
In addition to the alumni awards, a junior from each college was awarded a $1,000 Alumni Association scholarship.
Molly Wiederholt, Jeremy Pingel, Stacy Lesmeister and Mitchell Paschen were the scholarship winners.
