With roughly six weeks left in the spring semester, we are quickly approaching the end of our school year. The weather will start getting warmer, and things will start to turn green. As students we need to stay focused.

The post-spring syndrome, as I like to call it, causes laziness and lack of motivation in students. Let's face it, when we get back from spring break it is harder for all of us to get back into the classroom.

Coming back from spring break is a trying time for a student's concentration. We are starting to pull out those summer clothes, but the weather is not here yet. The warm weather on the way makes it pretty hard for students to keep their minds off summer while we are stuck in stuffy classrooms.

Many fellow students I have talked to admit they feel less and less like going to class once the weather warms up. They would much rather be outside doing something with their friends than stuck in class.

Students who have just come back from spring break in warmer climates are especially affected. They will have memories of sandy beaches and sunny climates dancing in their heads while their professor is lecturing.

What you need to remember as students is these last six weeks can make or break you. Most of us still have plenty of papers, exams and projects to do before we can call it quits for summer. Staying tough and going to class now is especially important to keeping your grades high, or to bring them up a bit before you close out the semester.

For freshmen it is especially important not to make a habit of slacking off after spring break. So study hard now and hopefully that habit will stick with you as the years go on.

Now, not all students slack off after spring break. Many students I talked to said coming back from break only makes them work harder to accomplish their goals and finish the year strong. We all need to try and stay ahead of our homework so we don't get bogged down when the weather is nice.

There are some easy ways to stay focused after spring break. Remember to get outside as much as you can when you're not finishing up your homework so you don't feel so cramped in class. Go eat outside for lunch or, if it is not too wet, take your books and study outside. You'll feel better about having to go to class. If you prefer to study inside, make sure you don't have a clear view of the window from your desk or you may be tempted to quit and head outdoors.

Believe me when I say it feels a lot better knowing you finished the year out strong, rather than going home with Cs, Ds or Fs for the summer. So when you're looking out that window or staring at the wall thinking of summer, snap out of it and get some work done. Hopefully we can all study hard and come mid-May when all our exams are finished we can relax and enjoy the wonderful weather.
