UW-Whitewater has had three different chancellors in the previous four years, and the search for next year's chancellor has begun.

"The search for a new chancellor is one of the most important tasks that we have," Jimmy Peltier, chair of the Search and Screen Committee, said. "Students, faculty, staff and the community have invested interest in making sure that our next chancellor has the requisite skills to lead our campus."

The process of finding a new chancellor began in November 2007. Peltier said the plan is to have a new chancellor chosen in May with a July starting date.

The committee has met with former chancellor James R. Connor, the academic assembly, the department chairs and many other groups on campus for input. The committee has also sent out a campus-wide survey to understand what people value in a chancellor and has received much feedback.

"We need to prioritize the chancellor qualities that we have gathered from the multitude of various input, and this is why we sent out the survey to all campus stakeholders and city of Whitewater leaders," Peltier said.

Some items on the list of chancellor qualities were willingness to maintain a high level of visibility and engagement across the university, intellectual curiosity and a sense of humor.

"We clearly understand that the rank ordering of priorities will differ based on whether the respondent is a dean, department chair, faculty member … so one of our goals is to look for common themes across all these groups. We will then look at individual qualities based on the needs of various stakeholders," Peltier said.

Peltier said the reason for the open process is to ensure that everyone who wants a say in the process gets one, and they will know that it was not a "closed door" process.

"We will also use this last opportunity to close the loop on our candidate evaluation process," Peltier said.
