The Warhawk wrestling team had a tough week, placing 10th out of 15 teams at the Dick Walker Invitational Saturday.
"We didn't get to go to the invitational at full strength," Head Coach Tim Fader said. "We had some injuries the last days of practice."
The team was without top performers Austin Bautista and Tom Trieloff, both of whom were hurt just days before the invitational.
Jon Schmidt and Sean Evans led the Warhawk wrestling team in place of Bautista and Trieloff. Both wrestlers took third in their weight class despite seeing some very tough competition.
"Sean Evans at heavyweight had a great weekend. He placed third and went 5-1 on the day," Fader said. "This is his third tournament in a row that he's put up a performance like this."
The Warhawks did well as a team and plan to do even better when they are back at full strength. The 'Hawks had only two out of 12 wrestlers go home with a losing record at the invitational.
Fader likes what he sees out of his wrestlers and definitely sees improvement in his team.
"Jeremy Johnson had a good tournament. I liked what I saw out of him. He was more aggressive and competitive," Fader said. "Tim Walsh went 4-2, and he took a big step this weekend."
Wartburg College took first at the tournament with a score of 177.5. Meanwhile conference rival UW-La Crosse had scored 64, and UW-Platteville 48 points, good for sixth and 11th in the tournament.
The Warhawks will return home for a dual meet against UW-La Crosse tonight at 7 p.m. The Eagles come into the match with a 9-0 record and is undefeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The 'Hawks are prepared for the meet and hope to have Trieloff and Bautista back for the match.
"We're really excited about it," Evans said. "We've worked really hard and expect to do well."
The meet against UW-La Crosse is the team's final home match of the year. The Warhawks also travel to Appleton to face Lawrence University Saturday.
