Women's basketball team defeats toughest competition of year

The fifth-ranked Warhawk women's basketball team faced its stiffest competition of the year Dec. 31 but came out victorious.
UW-Whitewater defeated the Division III No.1 team, Mary Washington University, 70-67 at the Surf City Classic in Irvine, Calif.
The 'Hawks were up most of the game and led by as many as 21 points with 5:45 left to play. The Eagles stormed back with a 28-7 run to tie the game, 67-67. With 14 seconds remaining, the Warhawks sealed the deal with a key defensive stop and late free throws by Heidi Sonntag and Trisha Thill.
Sophomore Kelsey Hendrickson led the way with 15 points, while senior Lindsey Buechner posted 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Dana Thompson provided some effort off the bench, adding 11 points.
The Warhawks will travel back to Wisconsin to play conference foe, UW-River Falls, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. in River Falls.
