If the old adage "defense wins championships" holds true, then a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title may be in the future of the women's basketball team.

Forcing 58 combined turnovers, the 'Hawks cruised past UW-Oshkosh and UW-Superior last week, winning by scores of 82-43 and 106-59, respectively.

"Our expectations are to play well and let the score fall where it may," Warhawk Head Coach Keri Carollo said. "Right now we are just trying to improve every game."

In both games, the Warhawks built insurmountable leads in the first half by playing suffocating defense and with accurate shooting. UW-Whitewater shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half against the Titans and shot 55.4 percent against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets.

In the victory over UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater was led by junior center Tiffany Morton, who scored 16 points. Morton narrowly missed out on a double-double, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

Those numbers helped stake the Warhawks to a 50-15 halftime lead, a margin the Titans couldn't close in the second half.

"We have our moments where sometimes we relax and lose focus, but we always seem to buckle down when needed," Morton said. "We know that it takes forty minutes to win a game and that you can not hold anything back."

Sophomore Kelsey Hendrickson filled out the box score against UW-Superior, posting 22 points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists. The 'Hawks led by 42 points at halftime but only outscored the Yellowjackets by five in the second half.

"We have to play our hardest every game no matter who we play," Hendrickson said.

UW-Whitewater is now 7-0 overall with a 3-0 conference record, and is ranked in the top 10 nationwide in two different Division III polls.

"We don't talk about rankings so much. We just really focus on how we can get better for the next game," Carollo said. "The margin of victory may be large but there are always areas we can improve on."

The 'Hawks travel Saturday to take on Luther College at 7 p.m.
