WSG is right to question how campus money is spent

I was disappointed to read the Royal Purple Staff Opinion article regarding the free lunch program. While this would have been a great opportunity to focus on how student funds are spent and how WSG decides where funds should be placed, you turned the subject into a rant claiming that WSG is discriminating against the United Methodist Ministry because it is a religious organization.
The proposal to WSG asked that $15,205 of student funds be given to them to continue with the free lunch. While I agree that UMM is doing college students a great service by providing a free lunch, the truth of the matter is that the lunch would no longer be free if student funds were supporting it. Although the $1.50 fee seems like a small amount to ask us to donate, the bigger picture is that the $15,205 is a lot of money that could be going towards other things. While I appreciate what UMM is doing for students, I personally do not want to pay for something I know I will never use. And yes, as you stated in your opinion, my tuition goes towards many things that I never use, but why add one more thing?
I highly disagree with your opinion that WSG was acting out of fear. WSG is a representation of the student body. It is their job to determine how students would want their funds to be spent. Of course, being that UMM is a church, questions will be brought up about whether or not that is an appropriate use of student funds. We should be lucky that we have a group of students willing to question how our money is spent, rather than throwing it at any organization that asks for it.

Well, thats a bit out of proportion, too. I happen to agree with the paper on its point of money going to all sorts of things we don't use. And anyways, what would YOU put that $15,000 towards? the drive thru liquor store? getting another scoreboard or something when the one we have is perfectly fine? instead, the $1. (Continued…)

First of all Kendra, from my knowledge, WSG doesn't fund any drive through liquor stores and the new scoreboard was funded by private donors.
Second, you can't look at this as a $1. (Continued…)

First off you're taking two unrelated issues and putting them together...deciding not to punish those who distribute alcohol to minors has nothing to do with how student funds are spent. (Continued…)
