UW-Whitewater's Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization Chapter won three dynamic awards from Nov. 1-3 during the National CEO Conference in Chicago.

In the first month after going national, UW-Whitewater's CEO chapter took first place in the Web Site Competition and second place in Best Chapter Business Plan and Best Fundraising Activity.

More than 1,400 national and international CEO members participated in the competition. Only one school received more awards than UW-Whitewater.

Anna Hoffman, senior, said for such a new organization, it's amazing how well the CEO did.

"I've attended numerous events, and I've always been impressed," Hoffman said. "I'm not entirely surprised to hear just how well they are doing."

"I am extremely proud of our chapter and to have done this well against seasoned chapters illustrates just how good of a chapter we have," marketing professor Jimmy Peltier said in a Nov. 7 news release. "Given that we are still such a young chapter, my expectations for the future are limitless."

In addition to the competition at the annual conference, those interested gathered to take advantage of the networking potential and also for advice and support from entrepreneurs and other business leaders. During the three-day conference, the 1,200 attendees gained expertise from current entrepreneurs, including lessons they've learned so far.

One important role of the university is to act as a means of developing the products of scientific discovery, CEO Adviser Bill Dougan said.

"Students have knowledge of new techniques and ideas which are often sources of new businesses," Dougan said. "Such businesses have a high potential to improve the economic climate of the state or region as well as the economic fortunes of the individuals themselves."

UW-Whitewater's CEO hosts meetings with successful entrepreneurs throughout the semester. They also offer volunteer opportunities through which members gain valuable insight and first-hand experience in the business industry. Any and all students are able to join. Students with science and technology backgrounds with entrepreneurial intentions are especially encouraged.

"Entrepreneurs have the desire and energy to succeed, something that our students have in abundance," Derek Henze, CEO president and founding member, said in a news release. "There is a strong need on this campus to provide an outlet for young entrepreneurs. Hopefully students from across the university and from multiple majors will take advantage of this opportunity, which in the end will only make us stronger."

Meetings are held at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays in Upham Hall 142. For more information go to www.uwwceo.org.
