The University Center provided a pumpkin painting and cookie decorating event last Wednesday at Esker Hall 109B.

The event was limited to 20 participants. Each participant was given a small pumpkin, and paints in all colors were provided, as well as brushes, in order to paint the pumpkins.

Freshman Samantha Rivera has attended every event put on by the UC, including soap stone carving and tile painting.

"I'm not in any art classes, and I'm interested in this," Rivera said. "Plus, it's free."

Elizabeth Wiza is a senior and helps organizes the events.

"We had this [event] planned since the summer," Wiza said. "We try to do one to two programs a month."

The styles and patterns in which the pumpkins were painted varied. Stripes, witches, ghosts, moons and even a penguin could be found on the pumpkins.

Cookies with white, black, orange and green frosting were also set out. Green, brown and orange sprinkles were set by the frosting, and there was hot apple cider as well. Participants coated their cookies with frosting and sprinkles and ate them as they continued working.

Assistant to the executive director of the UC, Kim Adams, said the UC is offering free programs like the pumpkin painting event to inspire students to be creative.

"The university is committed to having an art program," Adams said.

Every program the UC has put on this year has been filled. Adams said they've even had to turn people away.

The pumpkin painting event was not judged because the UC is gearing up for its next free event, a student photography contest. The contest is open to all UW-Whitewater students, and digital and 35mm photos are accepted. Photos can be turned in at the Information Center, UC 250.
