"Right now we are continuing to plan to occupy at the beginning of the second semester," said director of Student Affairs, Stephen Summers.
Major construction outdoors has mostly been completed with the interior set to be completed during the winter months.
"Almost everything that is going on is going on inside at this point," Summers said.
The new building will feature a new Down Under, with Tomato Head Red's restaurant for Italian and Coyote Jack's for burgers. The national food choices found in the old UC, such as Burger King, will no longer be offered.
The open area that allowed students to cut through the UC has been closed off.
"This project actually came in over budget, and one of the ways of fixing that was giving more of the building to the contractor earlier," Summers said.
The new UC will only be closed from 2-7 a.m., however, so students will still be able to pass through the building during most times to get across campus.
The new UC also offers many meeting rooms and easier accessibility than the old building.
"The design of the new meeting rooms is larger to accommodate larger student organizations," Summers said. "The old building was built in three different phases and things didn't connect; when you get in the new building you'll see, based on a series of ramps, the building is all connected now."
Another major focus of the new UC will be the existence of gathering spots, according to Summers.
"There will be a lot of gathering spots in the new building because students said they wanted an informal place that they could see and be seen, so you're going to see a lot of those," he said.
Other projects currently underway on campus include a remodeling project for Moraine Hall, the campus bookstore, which is set to begin in the spring. Two new residence halls are also in the process of being built, with the state budget deliberations being the cause for delay.
