The College of Letters and Sciences hosted the reopening of the newly renovated office space in White Hall last week Wednesday.
"Now that we're all here, we're just as well, if not better off than before," said Wade Dazey, philosophy/religious studies chair.
White Hall, which was previously an international and handicap accessible residence hall, now contains 104 staff offices, five multipurpose conference rooms, with at least one doubling as a library, three classrooms, one single-sex bathroom per floor, a computer lab, break room and a grand reception area.
The building has also been outfitted with an air conditioning system, new carpets, fresh paint and in some cases, new furniture.
"The folks in Facilities Planning and Management did a wonderful job remodeling White Hall in time for the College of Letters and Sciences staff to move into their newly remodeled offices for the [2007-08] school year," Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer said.
Possession of the resident hall on May 29 marked the beginning of the actual renovation to White Hall. The move-in took place in two waves.
"It took a supreme effort campus wide to meet the tight schedule and complete the White Hall project on time," said Pat Jankowski from Facilities, Planning and Management.
The first of these deadlines was June 13, only 15 days after acquisition of the building. The staff members of the history department were the first to move into White Hall.
The history department was joined by the philosophy/religious studies, sociology/anthropology, social work, political science, women's studies, and race and ethnic studies departments on Aug. 6.
Staff members were asked to reduce clutter and pack up their belongings before the actual move date to make the transition smoother.
"The College of Letters and Sciences was very patient, cooperative and helpful; which made the whole process more efficient," said Ken Kramer, crafts worker supervisor for Facilities, Planning and Management.
