The Iowa football team won't hit the gridiron until late August, but today's release of NCAA Football '09 in stores nationwide signifies the kickoff of football mania for many fans and gamers.



The game, published by EA Sports, contains all 119 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division-IA) teams.

July is a hectic month of almost non-stop work for Bruce Weber. The Illinois coach has often been on the road recruiting, attending multiple national AAU tournaments to scout some of the nation's best prep talent.

But even during the NCAA-mandated dead period from July 16-21, during which coaches are prohibited from recruiting, Weber finds himself doing work - yard work, that is.

UIC Head Men's Basketball Coach Jimmy Collins will lead the Flames well beyond next season as athletic director Jim Schmidt announced on July 1 a three-year contract extension for the winningest basketball coach in school history.

Patterson diagnosed with tonsillar cancer

Late last week, Leatherneck football coach Don Patterson informed Western Illinois University athletic personnel of his immediate leave of absence citing medical reasons. Patterson was recently diagnosed with tonsillar cancer.

Cancer of the tonsils occurs predominantly in men.

For the past two weeks, the buzz over Brett Favre's retirement has reached dizzying heights. Although he denied rumors in April, Favre now says that he made a mistake and retired too early, and would like to return to Lambeau Field. Favre, who is currently on the NFL's retirement-reserve list, has asked the Green Bay Packers to release him if they will not allow him to return.
